Essay 2: What is Sociology? why is it important?

Some people think that sociology is useless, because it doesn’t bring much benefit to companies. And this is true: sociology doesn’t serve to generate profits, there is much deeper and nobler benefit for society. In this essay I'll explain why studying sociology is worthy and how it’s beneficial for society. Let's start with the basics.

Sociology is a science. And, like all science, it contributes crucial knowledge about the world. Sociology has at least two objects of study: society and social action. Without sociology we couldn’t know the structure and functioning of society, in addition we wouldn’t know the motives, interests and values that explain social action. Therefore, without sociology we would seem "natural" everything we are and do. Can you imagine a world in which exploitation, domination and oppression were naturally justified? That is the world without sociology: a world where you can be mistreated because a God or a nation says so.

Now we can understand why some people say that sociology does not bring many benefits to companies, because these people are usually managers or powerful people. These types of people benefit from exploitation, oppression and domination. But these people don't understand that without exploitation we would all benefit, therefore we would all be happier and more united

For this reason, sociology is a beneficial science for society, since it helps us to know our way of co- existing between humans. And, once we know the social reality and understand how it works and how it’s, we can think how we would like it to be. Therefore, I consider that sociology is the reflective science par excellence, because it fundamentally helps us to imagine new worlds, better worlds.
